Great question! First let’s consider why you want to write a book. There are so many reasons:
To make money
There are a lot of people who think that making money is a great reason. In fact, the vast majority of authors make very little money from their books – whether they use traditional, hybrid or self-publishing. Unless you already have a captive market, a high profile, are very, very lucky or are a master at marketing and PR, then chances are your bank account is never going to directly benefit from your book.
There are easier ways to make money so if that’s your primary aim, another solution may be better for you.
To build your credibility in your field
This is a huge benefit of being an author. There is a very definite psychological response to those of us who are published authors. It is very highly regarded. Let’s face it storytellers have always rated highly in any community and that hasn’t changed.
A book is a way to demonstrate your expertise, knowledge and skills in a non-salesy way and if someone is reading your book, they are already interested so you’re pushing on the proverbial ‘open door’.
A book is the ultimate business card. People will respond to it. They will be impressed that you have done it and published it.
I have noticed at workshops that handing out book to attendees makes them feel as though they have already received value from you, and they have.
To increase your reach
Most of us do what we do because we want to help people. We can only see and reach so many people despite the incredible range of technology available to us now. A book can reach thousands of people. Your skills and experience, your knowledge can help many, many more people.
To inspire and motivate people.
So many of us have great stories about how we have overcome limitations and succeeded. All of us have been inspired by others’ stories and you can be sure that your story will help others move past their blocks or lack of knowledge. A book can spread your message to so many more people.
It’s an inexpensive way into your sales funnel.
So many business owners provide lead magnets and webinars to reach new clients or customers and the next step is an affordable product or service to encourage them further. A book is not only affordable – it can build trust and connection and a stronger belief in your credibility as an expert in your field.
It is a strong way to communicate your brand values.
A book is an excellent opportunity to communicate with your audience what your values and mission are in a non-salesy way. In everything you write you reveal more about yourself and your business and what you stand for.
Which brings me to the last point. A book may not boost your bank account directly, but we all know that building credibility, extending your reach, increasing the sense of connection and trust and inspiring people in a way that is affordable and accessible has massive indirect benefits for our businesses.
In a study undertaken by Mike Schultz where 200 business book authors were interviewed about their experience, 96% said their business benefitted indirectly and would recommend writing a business book. That is a fairly resounding result.
Many of us are good at the businesses we run and have a lot of expertise and knowledge, however that doesn’t always run to writing a book.
